Washington: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will visit Iceland as part of Washington's efforts to boost its strategic interests in the Arctic. Rubio is meeting with Icelandic authorities in Reykjavik to discuss economic and security cooperation, with defence, Arctic security, and commerce being significant concerns in the ongoing debate.

The visit comes almost two weeks after the United States concluded a security pact with Denmark and Greenland. The agreement is part of Washington's larger drive to enhance its position in the Arctic, an area with growing geopolitical importance due to its location, growing shipping routes, and competition from Russia and China.

Iceland is particularly crucial for US and NATO security because to its location in the North Atlantic and proximity to Arctic routes. Although Iceland does not have a permanent military, it has historically relied on NATO and defence ties with the United States. Washington does not currently have a permanent military base there.

Rubio's visit to Iceland is the first leg of a larger European tour, which runs from October 5 to 8. He will then fly to Greece for the US-Greece Strategic Dialog, which will address defence, energy, and regional security, before proceeding to Portugal for discussions on defence, economic, and technological cooperation.
