India’s Supreme Court Seeks EC Explanation Over Voter List Revision Row

New Delhi: The Supreme Court asked for clarifications from the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the Centre over claims of alterations to voter registration procedures during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral records.

The issue concerns amendments made to Form 6, which residents use to apply for inclusion on the electoral roll. The updated form apparently includes extra declarations about an applicant's or their family members' membership on previous electoral rolls.

A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justices Joymalya Bagchi, and V. Mohana, ordered the Election Commission to disclose records indicating who authorized the amendments and how the decision was made.

The petitions have raised concerns about whether certain decisions were made without the approval of all three Election Commissioners. The ECI has maintained that the full Commission's judgments were unanimous.

The Supreme Court has neither ordered an immediate halt of the process or an action against the Chief Election Commissioner. It stated that it would review the records and responses before determining whether additional directives are required.
