UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for urgent global action to address climate change, warning that the planet is experiencing unprecedented warming and environmental stress.
He noted that 2024 has been confirmed as the hottest year ever recorded, while greenhouse gas concentrations continue to reach historic highs. He also warned that billions of people are now living in highly climate-vulnerable regions.
Although cautioning that the world is heading toward a temporary overshoot of the 1.5°C threshold, Guterres stressed that immediate action can still limit the worst impacts. He called for deeper emissions cuts, faster renewable energy adoption, protection of forests and oceans, and stronger climate finance support for developing countries.
Linking global concerns to national efforts, Bahrain’s ongoing environmental initiatives—including its net-zero 2060 pledge, mangrove restoration, and expansion of green projects—were noted as part of wider regional momentum toward sustainability.
Guterres concluded by urging collective action across governments, businesses, and communities, saying: “This is the moment to act for our environment and for our future.”
