Hot Air Balloon Makes Surprise Landing on Residential Street in Bedford

Residents of Bedford were left stunned after a hot air balloon landed in the middle of a residential street on Sunday morning.

The balloon was seen descending over Bower Street at around 9:30 a.m., squeezing its way down between parked cars, telegraph poles, and rows of houses.

Eyewitness Sam Coldham, who was out walking his dog with his partner, Sian King, said the balloon appeared to miss nearby Russell Park and looked as though it might struggle to land safely. Acting quickly, he grabbed the guide rope and helped bring it down smoothly.

“No-one was hurt, it didn’t touch anything except the ground,” Coldham said, adding that the pilot thanked him, joking he had “saved his bacon.”

Another witness, Emma Firman, described the landing as “the most incredible scene,” saying she feared it would hit rooftops, cars, or overhead wires before it touched down safely.

The British Balloon and Airship Club later confirmed that the balloon “landed without incident” and all passengers were safe.
