European Football Leagues Call for FIFA Governance Reform

Paris: The Premier League, Spain's La Liga, Italy's Serie A, and Germany's Bundesliga have asked for significant changes to FIFA's governance, including stronger accountability and more involvement for football stakeholders in critical decisions.

According to the four leagues, FIFA requires clearer constitutional constraints on its authority as well as a tighter separation of regulatory and commercial obligations. They also requested for more consultation on issues affecting domestic competitions, such as the international football schedule.

The action comes as FIFA President Gianni Infantino faces rising criticism for abandoning the FIFA Forward Enterprise initiative, which would have allowed private investors to participate in FIFA's commercial and event-related operations. The initiative was cancelled in July following objections from numerous major football organizations.

European leagues have also voiced worry about the expansion of international competitions and what they see as increased pressure on the local football schedule. They contend that leagues, clubs, and players should have a formal say in issues that have a significant impact on the game.

The call adds to the growing pressure for change inside FIFA. Infantino has recommended an impartial external review of FIFA's governance framework, as well as meetings with member associations and other stakeholders; the matter is anticipated to be considered during the FIFA Council meeting in October.
