Travelling alone as a hijabi woman can present unique challenges, but with careful planning and awareness, it can also be an empowering experience. R

asha Yousif, a Bahraini who travels alone, recently shared with The Daily Tribune her travel experiences and provided important safety advice for hijabi women who are embarking on solo journeys.

While Bahrain itself is recognised as a remarkably safe country, Rasha emphasised the need for increased vigilance when venturing beyond the familiar Gulf region, particularly in foreign destinations where safety hazards such as pickpocketing, sexual harassment, and kidnapping concerns may arise.

To help fellow travelers mitigate these risks and ensure a safe and rewarding journey, Rasha provided a comprehensive set of safety tips: “One of the key recommendations is to avoid walking in poorly lit or unfamiliar places, especially during nighttime.

If your flight arrives late, it’s always a good idea to arrange for airport pickup through your hotel,” Rasha advised.

She further said that the importance of maintaining privacy and personal security, saying, “When interacting with locals, it’s essential to exercise discretion and refrain from sharing personal information.

I strongly advise against giving out your hotel address to strangers you meet during your trip.” Rasha urged travelers to “keep your belongings close at all times, including your passport, money, and other valuables.

Stay alert in crowded areas and use common sense to protect yourself from potential theft.” Dressing appropriately according to local customs and traditions was another significant point Rasha raised.

She explained, “Wearing culturally suitable attire not only shows respect for the host country but also helps you blend in and avoid unnecessary attention.”

Perspective Reflecting on her extensive travel experiences, Rasha shared how her journeys have profoundly impacted her perspective on cultures, diversity, and global issues.

Engaging in conversations with locals and fellow travelers has provided her with invaluable insights into different ways of life, daily struggles, and belief systems, further enriching her travel experiences.

“Cultural celebrations, such as weddings and religious ceremonies, have been a remarkable way for me to witness traditional lifestyles and establish connections with local communities,” Rasha expressed.

“Attending these events allows me to immerse myself in the local culture and gain a deeper understanding of the people I encounter.”

As Rasha continues her globetrotting adventures, she hopes that her safety tips and personal experiences will inspire and empower other solo travelers, particularly women, to embark on their transformative journeys.
