A man has been sentenced to one year in prison for delivering a public speech containing sectarian remarks that could fuel tensions in society. The Northern Governorate Minor Criminal Court issued the ruling, the Public Prosecution said.
The case followed a report from the Cybercrime Directorate after videos appeared on social media showing the defendant speaking before a gathering. According to the prosecution, the remarks included insults and belittling of Islamic figures and symbols in a context that could affect social peace and community cohesion.
The defendant was questioned and confronted with the videos before being referred to the competent court in custody. The Chief Prosecutor said legal action would continue against practices that could spread hatred or fuel tensions, stressing the importance of social peace, national unity and peaceful coexistence.
