Regional Workshop On Responsible AI Governance Concludes

A regional workshop on responsible artificial intelligence (AI) governance in Arab countries concluded in Manama after two days of discussions on developing rights-based approaches to AI governance.

Organised by the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), in cooperation with the Arab Network of National Human Rights Institutions and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the workshop was held in partnership with the Arab Organisation for Information and Communication Technologies.

The workshop brought together representatives from governments, national human rights institutions, regional and international organisations, UN agencies, the private sector and civil society.

Sessions focused on national experiences in AI governance, developing a comprehensive Arab regulatory framework and mechanisms for monitoring responsible AI governance, including indicators, reporting and accountability tools.

Discussions stressed the importance of translating AI governance principles into practical measures and establishing a coherent, rights-based Arab approach that promotes transparency, accountability, non-discrimination, participation and inclusion while reflecting the region’s priorities and diverse contexts.

The workshop concluded with recommendations to strengthen regional cooperation and the exchange of expertise, develop practical human rights-based frameworks, build institutional capacities, improve monitoring and accountability mechanisms, and expand partnerships among relevant stakeholders.

The recommendations also aimed to support responsible innovation and help stakeholders keep pace with rapid developments in AI technologies.
