Bahrain warns UN of Houthi escalation as Gulf tensions deepen
Bahrain has warned the United Nations Security Council that escalating Houthi attacks pose a growing threat to regional and international security, as fighting and cross-border attacks intensify amid the wider Middle East crisis.
At an emergency Security Council session requested by Bahrain, France, the United Kingdom, Latvia and Greece, with Saudi Arabia and Yemen participating, Bahrain’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Jamal Fares Al-Ruwaie, condemned what the Kingdom described as continued Houthi escalation and violations of the truce.
Al-Ruwaie said Houthi forces had taken control of Mocha and large parts of Yemen’s western coast, as well as the Red Sea islands of Mayyun, Hanish and Zuqar. Bahrain said the developments threaten navigation through the Bab Al Mandab Strait and the Red Sea and have contributed to worsening humanitarian conditions in Yemen.
Bahrain also condemned repeated Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, including strikes affecting civilian areas and infrastructure.
