Motorists urged to follow safety instructions at traffic junctions

ManamaThe General Directorate of Traffic has cautioned motorists against the dangers of stopping at junctions during traffic accidents and trying to regulate traffic flow at non-working signal.

The directorate’s warning came few days after a video showing a woman in traditional attire (Abaya) regulating the flow of traffic at a busy intersection in the Capital went viral on local social media networks.

The woman was seen in the video directing the vehicles on one of the busiest intersections in the kingdom, the one between Oman Avenue and Highway 35 near Zinj, while the traffic signals broke down.

“The General Directorate of Traffic expresses thanks and appreciation to initiatives of citizens to ensure traffic safety and warns of the risks of stopping their vehicles at traffic junctions during accidents or try to regulate traffic flow at a non-working signal,” a statement issued yesterday by the directorate read.

The directorate urged the public to “call the operations room to report traffic signal with a technical fault to deploy the nearest patrol to the reported location”.

“There are traffic rules that the traffic personnel follow to regulate traffic flow and no one can handle such task without receiving the appropriate training,” the directorate asserted, while also hailing the contributions of volunteers in serving the community under the supervision of specialists.
