Bahrain lose to Brazil

ManamaBahrain under coach Yousuf Khalifa Alasbool were defeated in straight sets 25-14, 25-15, 25-18 by Brazil last night in a Round of 16 knockout match of the 2017 FIVB Boys’ U19 World Championship at Shaikh Isa Sports City in Riffa.

It was a tough match for Bahrain as the South American Championship runners-up last year to Argentina in Lima, Peru took control of the match from the start.

Brazil coached by Leonardo Carvalho took control of the match from the start of the first set and quickly raced into a 5-1 and then 14-4 lead, before maintaining a healthy lead and leading 19-10 in the latter stage of the set before going a set up.

The Bahrain’s made a more positive start and only trailed 6-7 in the second set, but the Brazilians then established a 13-8 lead and powered its way to a second set victory.

Bahrain started the third set on a positive note and held an early 4-3 lead, however the South Americans made it 5-5 and gradually extended its lead throughout the set to secure a quarter final berth and a 5pm encounter today with the still unbeaten Iran team.

Top scoring for Brazil was Welinton Oppenkoski (16 points) and Victor Aleksander Al Meida Cardoso (14) and Arthur Adriano Nath (12) and for Bahrain it was Hussain Thamer (9) and Sayed Mohammed Alabbar (6).  

Bahrain will now face off at 5pm with Turkey in the 9th-16th Classification matches.

Iran defeated Turkey 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-13) to maintain its perfect record in the championships, top scorers were Porya Yali (16) and Amirhossein Esfandiar (11) for Iran and Adis Lagumdzija (12) for Turkey. 

The other still unbeaten side Japan ran out 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-21) winners over Puerto Rico, with Kento Miyaura (13) and Tatsunori Otsuka (13) top scoring for Japan and for Puerto Rico it was Sebastian Negron (12).

Today pairs of quarter finals matches are scheduled for 1pm, 3pm, 5pm and 7pm with the 17th to 20th classification round-robin matches, featuring the four teams who finished bottom of their respective preliminary groups at 11am which conclude tomorrow.

The semi-finals and more classification matches are scheduled tomorrow with the Gold and Bronze Medal matches on Sunday.
