Pearl Coast Gets a New Generation of Guardians

Students from Al Fajr Private School joined the Northern Municipal Council in clearing rubbish from Barbar Park and the eastern stretch of the coast as part of activities marking World Cleanup Day.

Northern Municipal Council Chairman Dr Sayed Shubbar Al Wedaie told the students that the same shoreline had once been a key harbour for local pearl divers.

“Your fathers and your grandfathers set out from this coast,” Dr Al Wedaie said, recalling how boats once sailed from Barbar towards the pearling grounds.

Fishing boats also departed from the coast, he said, describing them as simple craft that formed part of Bahrain’s maritime heritage.

Dr Al Wedaie said the area's history made protecting the coast a shared responsibility.

“We must protect it and keep it in our sight,” he said.

The clean-up was organised by the Northern Municipal Council under the slogan “Cleanliness Is Our Culture” and was part of the cleanliness week held on the directives of Minister of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Wael bin Nasser Al Mubarak.

The initiative was organised in partnership with Al Fajr Private School and in cooperation with the Northern Area Municipality. Students took part alongside school management representatives and company officials.

Dr Al Wedaie also joined the students in collecting rubbish from the shoreline, turning the campaign into a hands-on lesson in environmental responsibility.

The programme included recreational activities at Barbar Park, combining environmental awareness with activities designed to engage the students.

The council said the campaign seeks to strengthen young people's awareness of public cleanliness and promote the idea that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility.

It also highlighted the importance of involving young people in environmental and community initiatives while strengthening cooperation between schools, municipalities and other organisations.

Before the students began the clean-up, Dr Al Wedaie urged them to take responsibility for the coast.

“Go ahead, collect the rubbish from here,” he told them, calling on the students to demonstrate their commitment to keeping Bahrain clean.
