Arab Cartoon Legend Delights Fans
When Tarek Al Arabi Tourgane began the opening bars of Detective Conan, it was not the children in the hall who sang loudest. It was their parents.
The Syrian artist behind some of the most recognisable cartoon theme tunes in the Arab world performed alongside his son Mohammed over the past two nights at the Bahrain Summer Toy Festival, held at the Bahrain International Exhibition Centre. This drew a crowd made up largely of the generation that grew up watching Spacetoon in the nineties.
Across two nights dedicated to nostalgia and joy, families and children packed the venue, singing along to theme songs Tourgane wrote and composed across decades, including "Detective Conan," "Ahd Al Asdiqaa," "Captain Majid," and "Sabiq wa Lahiq." The enthusiasm was not confined to the youngest members of the audience.
It is the second time Tourgane has performed in Bahrain, having appeared at the summer festival last year.
Among those in the crowd was Khalid, who said he was delighted to be there and still knows every old Spacetoon song by heart. He is preparing to launch a business making and selling figures of classic Spacetoon characters. This idea came to him when he looked for them himself and found none. Everything available on the market, he said, was based on newer anime characters rather than the ones he grew up with.
He believes the venture will appeal to a wide segment of the eighties and nineties generations who remain attached to those characters.
