As the commemoration of Imam Ali's martyrdom approaches, Bahraini Shiaa communities are preparing to observe the occasion with reverence while adapting their gatherings to the current circumstances in the Kingdom.
The martyrdom of Imam Ali holds deep spiritual significance for Shia Muslims, in Bahrain it is traditionally marked by mourning gatherings, Husseini recitations and processions of condolence.
However, in light of the tense regional situation and official directives aimed at maintaining public safety, organisers of matams say this year’s commemorations will take a more contained form.
Several organisers of matams confirmed to The Daily Tribune that they are fully adhering to guidance issued by the relevant authorities, particularly instructions prohibiting gatherings in public squares and open streets.
According to organisers, Husseini recitations will continue to be held inside matams, while traditional mourning processions that would normally take place in outdoor spaces will instead be conducted within the halls of matams.
They say the adjustment allows attendees to honour the occasion while ensuring that gatherings remain orderly and safe.
“We are committed to following the instructions of the authorities,” one organiser told The Daily Tribune. “The commemoration will continue inside the matam, and everything is expected to proceed calmly.”
Organisers added that they do not anticipate overcrowding, noting that most communities have already begun preparing arrangements to distribute attendees across different spaces.
Some matams said they will install additional enclosed tents adjacent to the main halls to accommodate mourners comfortably and prevent large numbers from gathering in one place.
The aim, organisers explained, is to preserve the spirit of the commemoration while prioritising safety and reassurance for worshippers.
For many families, the nights commemorating Imam Ali remain moments of reflection and shared grief.
Even under changing circumstances, organisers say the essence of the gathering remains unchanged: remembering the legacy of Imam Ali with dignity, patience and unity.
