Under-16s Banned From E-Bikes

General Directorate of Traffic has reminded the public of the legal requirements governing electric bicycles and scooters, stressing that users must follow safety rules to prevent accidents and protect other road users.

Under the regulations, children below 16 years of age are not allowed to ride electric bicycles. Children under seven are also prohibited from riding electric scooters unless supervised by a parent or guardian.

The directorate warned that allowing underage children to ride without the required supervision can result in legal responsibility for the parent or guardian.

It also stressed the importance of protective equipment. Electric bicycle riders must wear safety helmets, while electric scooter riders must use helmets and protective gear for their shoulders, hands and legs.

According to Decision No. 58 of 2026, electric bicycles and scooters cannot be used on external roads or roads where the maximum speed exceeds 50 kilometres per hour. Their use is also prohibited on vehicle lanes, road shoulders and emergency lanes.

The maximum permitted speed for both electric bicycles and scooters is 25km/h. Carrying an additional passenger, riding against traffic, or operating the vehicle in a way that endangers the rider or others is prohibited.

The Traffic Directorate urged users to give priority to pedestrians and other vehicles where required and stressed that families have an important role in educating children about the rules.

Authorities said awareness campaigns and field monitoring would continue, with legal action taken against violations that put road users at risk.
