Eiffel Tower shut after staff protest over sidelining of women

Paris: The Eiffel Tower was temporarily closed on Monday after employees staged a walkout over complaints that female workers were ignored during a private visit by a Hindu religious delegation.
On Saturday, over 100 Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) members visited the historical site. According to union representatives, female workers were urged to leave their workstations or avoid specific areas when the group walked by.
SETE, the Eiffel Tower's operator, agreed that the delegation had asked plans to minimise interactions with women, but said such conditions should not have been granted and were inconsistent with the company's objectives of gender equality.
BAPS apologised for any discomfort caused, stating that the visit was planned to limit interruption and that it valued mutual respect. Paris officials have opened an investigation into the incident.
The dispute has sparked a broader debate in France about employment equality, religious sensitivity, and whether such requests may be met by public organisations.
