Zelenskyy Says Russia Open to Renewed Negotiations

Kyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia is ready to negotiate, citing messages conveyed by U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner after their meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. The remarks fuelled optimism that stalled diplomatic attempts to end the war might be renewed.

Witkoff and Kushner later flew to Kyiv to meet with Zelenskyy as Washington works to build a new framework for peace talks. After earlier efforts failed to create a long-term ceasefire, the United States has pushed Moscow and Kyiv to resume real talks.

According to Zelenskyy, Washington is looking into potential winter de-escalation measures like as energy infrastructure, grain supplies, and oil and gas exports. He suggested that minimising attacks on essential infrastructure could help establish the environment for larger conversations.

Despite the diplomatic engagement, substantial disagreements between Russia and Ukraine persist, mainly over territorial control, security guarantees, and Ukraine's future partnership with NATO. Kyiv has repeatedly rejected ideas that would require it to give up land, while Moscow has maintained demands that Ukraine finds intolerable.

The current diplomatic efforts coincide with ongoing fighting and Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. Zelenskyy's remarks thus offer a potential opening for negotiations, but no ceasefire or peace accord has yet been achieved, and the chances of a breakthrough remain doubtful.
