Russia Resumes Strikes on Kyiv After Three-Day Pause

Moscow: Russia resumed missile and drone strikes on Kyiv early Tuesday, after a three-day hiatus that coincided with visits by US peace envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Moscow and Kyiv.

According to Ukrainian officials, the midnight assault killed at least two persons and injured ten more. Explosions and flames were reported throughout the capital, causing damage to residential structures, a school, a clinic, warehouses, and other infrastructure.

Ukraine's air force said it intercepted 31 cruise missiles, 142 drones, and two ballistic missiles, but dozens of places were still targeted. Authorities in Kyiv asked citizens to remain in bunkers as air defences were deployed to counter the onslaught.

The strikes occurred just after Witkoff and Kushner left Kyiv following talks with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as Washington attempts to restart stalled peace talks. Russia has stated that it does not rule out resuming three-way negotiations with Ukraine and the United States, but no breakthrough has been declared.

Russia said its strikes targeted military and logistical facilities, while Ukrainian officials accused Moscow of sabotaging diplomatic efforts by resuming the attacks shortly after the US envoys had left.
