No taxes on sewage services

An MP yesterday criticised the recent reports published by the local press, claiming that MPs would introduce taxes on sewage services.

Public Utilities and Environment Parliamentary Committee Head Adel Al Assoomy denied the reports, affirming that “no taxes would be imposed on citizens for receiving sewage services”.

He clarified that it was stated earlier that the committee would discuss with the government amending some of the articles of Law 33 of the year 2006 with regards to sewage services in the country.

“The committee will not allow introducing taxes for sewage services provided to citizens. What have been reported by some of the local dailies is some of the provisions that would be discussed, not implemented,” said Al Assoomy, who called upon the local press to have accuracy in their reports.

The MP stressed that the interest of Bahraini citizens was the centre of parliamentary work, as instructed by the wise leadership.

“Even during the exceptional economic situations witnessed by the country, we won’t allow any decisions that harms the interests of citizens,” he added.

Al Assoomy reaffirmed that imposing taxes was only mentioned in the government’s proposals, which were rejected by the committee.

This came as some local newspapers claimed lately that taxes of BD1 for sewage services would be imposed on citizens and expats soon, reporting that the decision had been approved by Parliament’s Public Utilities and Environment Committee.
