COLOMBO: A drunk truck driver killed six people and injured seven others after crashing into a crowd waiting for free food outside Sri Lanka's capital on Sunday night.

The victims were gathered at a roadside soup kitchen in Meegoda to receive food distributed for the traditional Buddhist festival of Vesak.

The 42-year-old driver immediately fled the scene following the devastating crash. However, local police tracked down and arrested the suspect shortly after the incident.

Subsequent medical evaluations officially confirmed that the driver was heavily intoxicated at the time of the collision.

The tragedy highlights a persistent road safety crisis in the South Asian country, which records roughly 3,000 traffic fatalities annually. Authorities are continuing their legal proceedings against the detained driver.
