SEOUL: A violent explosion and subsequent fire at a defence facility in South Korea killed five people and injured two others on Monday morning. The fatal incident occurred at approximately 11:00 AM local time at a Hanwha Aerospace production plant in Daejeon, located roughly 150 kilometers south of Seoul.
The blast reportedly tore through a production line dedicated to handling rocket propellant and large propulsion engines. Health officials stated that the bodies of the five victims were so heavily damaged by the blast and flames that they could not be immediately identified. Two survivors managed to escape the burning facility on their own, including one worker who remains in critical condition after suffering severe burns.
Emergency response efforts faced immediate complications because the factory operates as a government-designated national security facility. Consequently, arriving fire authorities were unable to access the building's physical layouts or blueprints due to strict protective security laws.
Following the disaster, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung ordered a total mobilization of all available government resources to secure the scene and a thorough state investigation to pinpoint the trigger.
