Russian Tu-95 Crashes During Training Flight, Six Dead
A Russian Tu-95 military aircraft crashed during a training flight in the far eastern Amur region on Tuesday, killing six crew members and injuring another, Russia’s Defence Ministry said.
The aircraft went down in an uninhabited area, according to a statement carried by Russia’s state-run TASS news agency. The injured crew member was evacuated to a medical facility for treatment.
Unverified videos shared on social media appeared to show flames and smoke rising from the crash site, accompanied by loud booming and crackling sounds. The footage could not be independently verified.
The Defence Ministry said the aircraft was flying without an ammunition load at the time of the incident.
The Tu-95 is a Soviet-designed, nuclear-capable strategic bomber that has been operated by Russia for decades. The aircraft is regularly used in Russian military training and exercises.
The cause of Tuesday’s crash was not immediately disclosed, and further details about the incident were not available in the initial reports.
