10-Year Jail Term for Endorsing Iranian Attacks Against Bahrain

The High Criminal Court has sentenced a defendant to 10 years in prison and fined him BD2,000 for endorsing the Iranian terrorist attacks against the Kingdom of Bahrain.

The court also ordered the confiscation of the mobile phone used in committing the offence, according to the Deputy Chief Prosecutor of the Terrorism Crimes Prosecution.

The case began after the Public Prosecution received a report from the Cybercrime Directorate at the General Directorate of Anti-Corruption and Economic and Electronic Security concerning images, videos and comments published on a social media account that encouraged and supported the Iranian attacks targeting Bahrain.

Investigations identified the defendant as the operator of the account.

The Public Prosecution launched its investigation after receiving the report, interrogated the defendant, heard witness statements and assigned technical experts to examine the electronic devices seized in the case.

The investigation and technical examination established that the defendant had committed the offence. The Public Prosecution subsequently referred him in custody to the High Criminal Court.

The court considered the case over several sessions, during which the prescribed legal safeguards, including the defendant’s right to defence, were observed before issuing its verdict.

The Public Prosecution affirmed that freedom of opinion and expression is guaranteed within the framework of the law, while those exercising this right are required to comply with legal provisions that protect society and the interests of the country.

It also stressed that it would continue to take firm action, within its jurisdiction, against acts that could threaten the Kingdom’s security and stability.

The statement further noted that publishing or circulating material supporting, endorsing or encouraging terrorist acts constitutes a criminal offence punishable under the law because of its implications for national security.

Citizens and residents were urged to act responsibly when publishing or circulating content and to comply with relevant legal requirements to help safeguard the Kingdom’s security and stability.
