Nepal Halts Rescue After Avalanche Leaves 16 Missing

Kathmandu: Nepal has halted search and recovery activities at the Himlung Himal base camp in Manang after a major avalanche killed 16 people on September 27.
Four bodies have been discovered thus far, including two climbing guides and two expedition kitchen staff. The remaining 12 missing people are all Nepali kitchen workers who work on mountaineering expeditions.
The avalanche buried the base camp under approximately 14 feet of snow. An eight-person rescue crew combed through the wreckage, but frigid weather, unstable snow, and treacherous mountain terrain made further excavation exceedingly perilous.
The Nepal National Mountain Guide Association stated that recovery attempts will continue once weather and mountain conditions improve. Himlung Himal, at 7,126 meters, is a favorite mountain among climbers preparing for higher-altitude climbs.
