US Prosecutors Reopen Cornell Gang Rape Case After Public Outcry

New York: Prosecutors in New York reopened a criminal investigation into allegations that seven fraternity members sexually abused a Cornell University student in 2024. The move comes after a lady filed a civil case earlier this month, which drew renewed public attention.
Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten stated that the evidence will be presented to a grand jury to decide if criminal charges should be filed. The lady claims that she was drugged and sexually abused at the Chi Phi fraternity house.
Prosecutors had previously rejected to file charges, noting discrepancies between her initial 2024 testimony to campus police and the allegations in the latest case. Her counsel opposes that depiction and has questioned the previous investigation.
Cornell said it supports the revived criminal investigation and that its own disciplinary procedures resulted in expulsions and suspensions. The Chi Phi chapter has been banned from the university since 2024.
