TOKYO: Tokyo suffers a record streak of 34 rainy days, marking the longest continuous period of rainfall in the Japanese capital since climate records began in 1886.
Announced by the Japan Meteorological Agency on Tuesday, the relentless downpour has completely shattered the previous 33-day record set back in 2019.
Central Tokyo has been soaked by 629 millimeters of rain in September through to Monday, reaching nearly three times normal levels and approaching the 1958 record.
Officials attribute this prolonged weather pattern partly to the El Niño phenomenon, which causes autumn rain fronts and Pacific high-pressure systems to remain longer than usual.
Furthermore, long-term global warming is impacting Japan's weather by driving higher atmospheric moisture and increasing precipitation.
This historic deluge follows months of regular heavy downpours and severe flooding throughout the wider Tokyo region, highlighting unprecedented shifts in regional climate dynamics.
