53 Killed in Guyana Ferry Disaster as Search Continues

Georgetown: The death toll from the Guyana ferry disaster has risen to 53, as rescue teams continue searching for survivors after the MV Barima capsized off the country's coast.
Prime Minister Mark Phillips said 76 people have been rescued so far, while authorities continue recovery operations. Officials believe 179 people were on board the ferry when it overturned on Saturday night during its journey from Georgetown to Port Kaituma in the Essequibo region.
The death toll has steadily increased as more bodies have been recovered. Authorities are investigating the cause of the disaster, including reports that two crew members tested positive for marijuana after the incident.
The tragedy has also exposed flaws in passenger records, with officials confirming the original manifest significantly undercounted the number of people on board. Rescue and recovery efforts remain underway.
