Kyiv: The death toll from a significant Russian missile and drone attack on Ukraine's capital Kyiv increased to ten on Thursday, authorities said, after overnight strikes destroyed residential neighbourhoods and civilian infrastructure.
Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv's military administration, said via Telegram that the death toll had risen to eight, accusing Russia of purposefully striking residential areas and civilians. Rescue personnel continued to search through the rubble of destroyed structures, warning that the number of casualties could increase as operations proceeded.
According to local authorities, at least 34 people suffered injuries during the accident, including children and emergency workers. Apartment complexes, a medical facility and other civilian sites were hit by missiles and drones at 28 different locations across Kyiv. A piece of a multi-story residential building fell, burying individuals beneath the debris, and fires broke out around the city.
After Ukraine's air force warned that ballistic missiles were on their way to Kyiv, sources reported numerous explosions throughout the capital. Thousands of citizens rushed refuge in underground metro stations as air raid sirens rang out throughout the night.
The assault occurred hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky cut short a visit to Ireland, citing intelligence indicating that Russia was preparing a ‘massive attack.’ He had encouraged Ukrainians to seek shelter as soon as an air raid alert was given.
Russia has intensified its aerial attacks against Ukrainian cities in recent weeks, as the war, now in its fifth year, shows no signs of ending despite renewed international calls for talks. Meanwhile, Ukraine has intensified long-range strikes on Russian military and energy facilities in an attempt to undermine Moscow's war effort.
