Jamaica files landmark slavery reparations petition in UK

London: Olivia Grange, the Culture Minister of Jamaica, is heading a delegation to the UK to formally petition King Charles III over Britain's need to pay reparations for slavery.
The petition requests that the King, as the head of state of Jamaica, refer three important questions to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council: whether slavery was a crime against humanity, whether Britain was legally required to make amends, and whether the forced transportation and enslavement of Africans in Jamaica was legal under English law.
According to Jamaica, this would be the first Commonwealth nation to seek reparatory justice through this legal channel. According to Grange, the petition is a significant step forward in Jamaica's ongoing effort to remedy the effects of centuries of slavery.
In order to explore the potential return of Jamaican cultural treasures, the delegation will also meet with representatives of the British Museum. Jamaica's legal action is a potentially important new stage in the conflict because the UK government has previously rejected calls for compensation for slavery.
