EU Says ‘No Place’ for War Criminal Glorification as Mladic Buried in Serbia

Belgrade: The European Union stated that there is ‘no place’ for the glorification of war criminals in the EU or nations seeking membership, as former Bosnian Serb commander Ratko Mladic was buried in Belgrade on Monday.
Marta Kos, EU Enlargement Commissioner, has criticised the honours to Mladic, saying that his glorification contradicts European ideals of reconciliation and victim respect. She also cancelled a scheduled trip to Serbia due to the scandal.
Thousands attended Mladic's burial, with supporters waving Serbian flags and showing photographs of the convicted war criminal. Mladic, 84, died while serving a life sentence for genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes perpetrated during the 1992-95 Bosnian War.
His forces carried out the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, which killed over 8,000 Bosniak men and boys. His burial renewed debate about Serbia's wartime past and its EU membership bid.
