Far-right AfD wins historic victory in German state election

Magdeburg: Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) achieved a historic victory in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt, capturing over 44% of the vote and emerging as the largest party by a wide majority. The result represents the AfD's best showing in the state, with its vote share more than doubling by the year 2021.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz's centre-right CDU suffered a significant setback, winning only 17-18%, approximately half of its prior score. The results indicate voters' rising dissatisfaction with the federal government and mainstream parties.
However, the AfD fell short of an outright majority, obtaining only 39 of the 83 seats, whereas 42 are required to govern alone. Mainstream parties have thus far refused to join coalitions with the AfD, making the state's government formation uncertain.
The result is a significant victory for the party and could boost its aspirations prior to Germany's federal election in 2029. It also heightens discussion about the nation's political ‘firewall’ against the extreme right.
