Five Dead, Five Injured After Amazon Cargo Plane Overshoots Miami Runway

Miami: At least five people were killed and five more injured after an Amazon Prime Air cargo plane overshot a runway while landing at Miami International Airport on Sunday afternoon, colliding with multiple vehicles and catching fire.

Prime Air Flight 7598, a Boeing 767-300 flown by cargo carrier 21 Air, arrived from San Juan, Puerto Rico. The aircraft ran off the airport’s diagonal runway at around 2 p.m. local time, travelled over a roadway and collided with multiple vehicles before coming to rest in a grassy area.

The incident prompted a significant emergency reaction, with around 200 emergency workers and over 60 fire-rescue units dispatched. Heavy flames and thick black smoke destroyed parts of the aeroplane, while rescue workers battled to save people trapped within the jet and in vehicles hit by it.

Three of the five injured victims were transported to trauma centres in severe condition, while two others were treated for less serious injuries. The crash halted operations at one of the busiest airports in the United States for several hours. More than 160 flights were cancelled, roughly 325 delayed, and some diverted to neighbouring airports.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Thunderstorms and wind gusts of up to 30 mph were reported in the vicinity at the time of the accident, but officials have yet to assess whether the climate had a role. The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are probing.

Amazon extended condolences to the victims' families and stated that it will fully cooperate with investigators.
