Dengue Cases Surge as Bangladesh Hospitals Run Short of Beds

Dhaka: Dengue infections in Bangladesh have increased significantly, with 42,590 people hospitalised and 117 deaths reported so far this year. In the most recent 24-hour period, 1,558 new patients were admitted, and four died, the highest daily admittance figure in 2026.
The spike is putting hospitals under increasing strain, notably in Dhaka, where medical institutions are grappling with soaring patient numbers and limited beds. The healthcare system is already overburdened by a nationwide measles outbreak, which has killed over 1,000 children this year.
Health experts are concerned that September will be even worse than August, which already had the highest monthly dengue caseload of the year. Warm, humid, and humid circumstances provide perfect breeding conditions for Aedes mosquitos, prompting concerns that illnesses will continue to rise in the coming weeks.
In an effort to contain the outbreak, authorities have increased their efforts to eliminate standing water and demolish mosquito breeding grounds. They are also stepping up statewide awareness and cleanup initiatives.
