New York: US filmmaker Carl Rinsch, well known for directing 47 Ronin, has been sentenced to 30 months in prison for defrauding Netflix by squandering $11 million supplied by the streaming giant to complete the sci-fi series White Horse.
According to federal authorities, Netflix transferred the funds in 2020 to help finish the project, but Rinsch diverted the majority of the money into risky stock and cryptocurrency investments. He eventually spent millions of dollars on luxury purchases such as premium cars, costly furniture, designer goods, and other personal costs while the series remained unfinished.
A US judge also ordered Rinsch to return $11 million and forfeit assets related to the scam. During the sentencing, his lawyers contended that he had been struggling with mental health concerns and asked for leniency. The defence has stated that Rinsch intends to appeal the conviction and punishment.
The case has received widespread attention in Hollywood as one of the most high-profile fraud cases involving a major streaming platform's production funding.
