CAMBRIDGE: In a medical world-first, Cambridge scientists have successfully tested a universal coronavirus vaccine designed entirely by artificial intelligence in humans.
Developed by the University of Cambridge and spin-out DIOSynVax, the vaccine proved safe, with no significant side effects, during its initial clinical trial in 39 healthy volunteers in the UK.
The breakthrough technology utilizes machine learning to analyze global viral genetic sequences. Instead of targeting specific variants, the AI constructed a synthetic ‘super-antigen’ that targets conserved, immutable viral features essential for survival. This approach sparked immune responses against SARS-CoV-2, the original SARS virus, and related animal coronaviruses that can spill over into humans.
Administered needle-free via a high-velocity microfluid jet, this universal vaccine represents a paradigm shift. Rather than reactively chasing mutations, researchers can now future-proof immunizations, potentially neutralizing entire families of viruses and preventing pandemics before they start.
