Bandar Seri Begawan: Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah has appointed his son, Prince Abdul Mateen, as foreign minister in a major Cabinet reshuffle widely seen as part of preparations for the kingdom's next generation of leaders.
The 79-year-old ruler also named another son, Prince Abdul Malik, to the Cabinet, increasing the number of royal family members serving in government. The changes come as the sultan, who has faced health issues in recent years and reduced his public appearances, seeks to strengthen leadership within the oil-rich nation.
Prince Mateen, a military officer, helicopter pilot and one of Brunei's most recognisable royals, has gained international attention through his social media presence and public engagements. He will continue serving in the armed forces while taking on his new diplomatic role.
Meanwhile, Prince Abdul Malik received his first Cabinet appointment as a minister in the Prime Minister’s Office. Crown Prince Al-Muhtadee Billah, the heir to the throne, remains in his existing senior government position.
The reshuffle is being viewed as a significant step in ensuring continuity within Brunei’s leadership as the country plans for the future under one of the world's longest-reigning monarchs.
