Brussels: European Union leaders are moving rapidly to secure a ‘grand bargain’ with the United States as they attempt to resolve a deepening trade standoff. On Tuesday, reports confirmed that Brussels is preparing a massive proposal to increase purchases of American energy products and defense hardware.

This shift in strategy follows intense pressure from President Donald Trump, who has threatened universal baseline tariffs of up to 20% on all European exports.

EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič signaled that the bloc is willing to address the trade deficit to achieve long-term stability. While the deal is seen by some as a capitulation, EU officials argue that avoiding a full-scale trade war is essential for protecting five million jobs currently at risk.

By pivoting toward US energy and military procurement, the EU hopes to satisfy American demands while securing its own economic survival in a volatile global market.
