Zelenskyy presses Europe to name representative for potential Russia peace talks

Kyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged European governments to decide who would represent them in any future negotiations with Russia, highlighting growing uncertainty over Europe’s role in shaping a potential peace process.

Following a call with European Council President António Costa, Zelenskyy said Europe must ensure it has “a strong voice and presence” in any talks and suggested it was time to clarify who would speak on its behalf.

The appeal comes amid broader questions over whether Europe can act as a unified political participant in diplomacy on the war, rather than remaining primarily a financial and military backer.

While the EU, its member states, and the UK all play significant roles in supporting Ukraine, foreign and security policy remains divided across institutions and capitals, complicating the idea of a single negotiating voice.

The issue has gained urgency as discussions around possible future talks continue to be shaped largely by Washington and Moscow, raising concerns in Kyiv and Brussels about Europe’s influence in any eventual settlement.

Zelenskyy’s remarks underline Ukraine’s push for Europe not only to support Kyiv but to secure a defined place at the table in any negotiations that could determine the region’s long-term security architecture.
