New York: A 33-year-old woman gave birth to a baby boy inside a Brooklyn courtroom after going into labor during her arraignment on drug possession and trespassing charges, according to U.S. media reports.

The woman, identified as Samantha Randazzo, was reportedly nine months pregnant when she appeared in court on Friday night.

Randazzo had been arrested a day earlier by the New York City Police Department on allegations of criminal possession of a controlled substance and trespassing after officers found her on the roof of her Brooklyn apartment building.

According to police, Randazzo initially did not disclose that she was pregnant and declined medical attention at the time of her arrest. Authorities said she later informed officers early Friday morning that she was pregnant and experiencing withdrawal symptoms, prompting her transfer to hospital.

After being discharged from hospital on Friday evening, she was taken to court for arraignment, where she went into labor and delivered her baby boy shortly before midnight.

Legal aid groups claimed the woman gave birth on a courtroom bench without adequate privacy or medical care, alleging she had spent more than 24 hours in custody before delivery.

Her lawyer, Wynton Sharpe, described the incident as “a joyful and sad situation, given the circumstances.”

Both the mother and newborn were later taken for medical care.
