Kathmandu: Legendary Nepali mountain guide Kami Rita Sherpa has broken his own world record after scaling Mount Everest for the 32nd time.
The 56-year-old climber, widely known as the “Everest Man,” reached the 8,849-metre summit on Sunday while guiding clients during Nepal’s busy spring climbing season.
In another historic achievement the same day, veteran climber Lhakpa Sherpa, known as the “Mountain Queen,” also extended her own record for the most Everest ascents by a woman, reaching the summit for the 11th time.
Nepal’s tourism authorities congratulated both climbers, describing their achievements as historic milestones for the Himalayan nation.
Kami Rita first climbed Everest in 1994 and has reached the summit almost every year since, often climbing more than once in a season. He first set the world record in 2018.
Lhakpa Sherpa made history in 2000 as the first Nepali woman to successfully summit Everest and descend safely. Her remarkable journey was featured in the 2023 documentary Mountain Queen.
This year’s Everest season has seen record demand, with nearly 500 foreign climbers receiving permits. Authorities have also faced safety concerns over congestion and route delays caused by glacier movement near base camp.
