Bogotá: The humanitarian situation in Colombia has deteriorated sharply, with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) reporting that the number of displaced persons doubled in 2025.
This surge represents the highest level of violence by armed groups in a decade, affecting at least 322,688 individuals. The conflict is driven by various factions vying for control over lucrative illegal industries, including the cocaine trade and gold mining, following the vacuum left by the 2016 FARC disarmament.
Beyond displacement, armed groups have increasingly used confinement as a tactic to exert territorial control, seeing a 99% rise in such incidents. The violence has also turned technological, with a 34% increase in casualties from explosive devices like drones.
As the nation approaches the May 31 presidential elections, security remains a paramount concern, underscored by the tragic assassinations of political figures and journalists.
