LIMA: Public prosecutors in Peru have launched an investigation into a suspected human trafficking network that allegedly lures citizens to Russia under false pretenses to fight in the war against Ukraine.

The recruiters targeted former military and police personnel through social media, offering lucrative security positions. However, once in Russia, victims were reportedly forced into active combat operations.

Legal representatives for the victims' families state that approximately 600 Peruvians have been enticed by monthly salaries reaching $3,000 since October.

Tragically, thirteen Peruvians have already been confirmed dead in the conflict. While the Russian embassy in Lima acknowledges that Peruvian citizens have signed military contracts, they maintain these agreements were entered into voluntarily and legally.

Meanwhile, the Peruvian foreign ministry continues to seek information regarding the whereabouts of its citizens currently serving in the Russian armed forces.
