Trump Signals Diplomatic Push After Israel-Lebanon Ceasefire Deal
US President Donald Trump announced that Israel and Lebanon have agreed to a temporary ceasefire, marking a potential step toward easing tensions in the region.
Trump said the agreement followed separate phone calls with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, describing the discussions as “excellent.”
According to the US president, the ceasefire is set to begin within hours and will last for 10 days, aimed at creating space for further diplomatic efforts. He added that he plans to invite both leaders to the White House for talks, in what could become the first meeting between them.
Trump also said he has tasked senior US officials, including Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, to work with both sides toward achieving a longer-term peace arrangement.
The announcement comes amid broader efforts by Washington to contain escalating tensions in the Middle East, including ongoing conflict involving Iran. Regional developments have intensified since clashes between Israeli forces and the Iran-backed group Hezbollah expanded earlier this year.
Lebanese officials welcomed the ceasefire, describing it as a key demand since the start of hostilities, while international reactions also pointed to cautious optimism.
Despite the announcement, reports indicated that clashes and airstrikes continued in parts of southern Lebanon shortly before the ceasefire was set to take effect, highlighting the fragile situation on the ground.
The proposed truce is seen as a potential opening for wider diplomatic engagement, although its success will depend on adherence by both sides and progress in broader regional negotiations.
