PRETORIA: Nearly 5,000 South African Afrikaners have applied for refugee status in the United States following an executive offer from the Trump administration. The programme, which specifically targets members of the minority group citing safety concerns and land rights issues, has seen a rapid influx of applications since its announcement earlier this year.
The initiative allows eligible Afrikaners to bypass traditional immigration queues, providing a direct pathway to residency in the US. Supporters of the move argue it offers a necessary lifeline to a community that feels increasingly marginalised, while critics in both Washington and Pretoria have questioned the legal basis for granting refugee status based on these specific socio-political conditions.
The South African government has expressed formal disapproval of the programme, stating that it misrepresents the domestic situation and undermines national efforts toward reconciliation. Despite this diplomatic friction, US officials have confirmed that the first group of approved applicants is expected to arrive in the United States within the coming months as processing accelerates.
This mass application marks a significant shift in migration patterns for the community, which has traditionally sought ties with Europe or Australasia. The US administration has defended the policy as a commitment to protecting ‘persecuted minorities’ globally, though the move remains a point of intense debate within international diplomatic circles.
