NEW DELHI: Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister, Dr. Khalilur Rahman, met with his Indian counterpart, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, in New Delhi on Wednesday, marking the most senior diplomatic visit from Dhaka since the 2024 revolution. The visit is a significant step in stabilizing relations following the political upheaval that toppled long-time Indian ally Sheikh Hasina and ushered in a new government under the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

Described as a ‘goodwill visit,’ the trip follows months of strained ties. Relations between the two neighbors were tested after Sheikh Hasina fled to India in August 2024, where she has remained in hiding. Tensions peaked in November when Hasina was sentenced to death in absentia for her role in the deadly crackdown during the uprising.

The discussions covered critical and sensitive bilateral issues, including the extradition of the former Prime Minister, trade relations, water-sharing arrangements, and border security. Bangladesh is also reportedly seeking increased energy cooperation and fertilizer supplies from India as it navigates economic pressures linked to the broader Middle East conflict.

External Affairs Minister Jaishankar stated he was ‘pleased to host’ his counterpart, noting that the two sides discussed ‘strengthening our bilateral relationship’ and agreed to explore new proposals for partnership through existing bilateral mechanisms.
