Microsoft has announced a $10 billion investment in Japan, marking its largest-ever commitment to the country as part of a four-year plan to expand artificial intelligence infrastructure and national cyber defenses.
Unveiled during a meeting between Microsoft President Brad Smith and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, the 1.6 trillion yen initiative aligns corporate expansion with Japan’s strategic goals of technological sovereignty and economic revitalization.
The core of the investment focuses on significantly increasing AI computing capacity through collaborations with domestic partners like SoftBank and Sakura Internet. This localized infrastructure is designed to allow government agencies and private corporations to process sensitive data within national borders, ensuring data residency while utilizing advanced cloud services.
Beyond hardware, the plan includes a massive digital skilling program aimed at training one million workers in AI-related fields by 2030 to address a projected labor shortfall in the technology sector.
Furthermore, Microsoft will deepen its cooperation with Japanese authorities to strengthen national resilience against escalating cyber threats by sharing advanced threat intelligence.
This move follows similar multi-billion dollar pledges in Singapore and Thailand, signaling an intensified competition among American technology giants for dominance in the rapidly growing Asian AI market.
