Denmark ‘Prepared for Worst’ as Troops Deployed to Greenland: Report

Copenhagen: Denmark and its allies deployed troops to Greenland earlier this year amid fears of a potential move by the United States to take control of the Arctic territory, according to a report by Danish broadcaster DR.
The report, citing a January 13 military operations order, said Danish forces were mobilised to prepare for the defence of the autonomous territory following heightened tensions linked to President Donald Trump’s repeated statements about acquiring Greenland.
Officials reportedly took the threat seriously in light of Washington’s earlier actions abroad, including its operation in Venezuela targeting President Nicolás Maduro. “We had to take all possible scenarios seriously,” an unnamed Danish military official told the broadcaster.
Under the cover of a NATO-linked exercise known as Operation Arctic Endurance, Denmark deployed troops along with elite units, joined by forces from France, Germany, and Sweden. Sources cited in the report said the deployment went beyond a routine drill, describing it as a real military operation with combat readiness, including medical supplies and explosives.
The move came as tensions escalated within NATO, of which both Denmark and the United States are founding members.
President Trump has repeatedly argued that US control of Greenland is vital for national security and had not ruled out the use of force, raising alarm among European allies.
Following weeks of heightened rhetoric, Trump later signalled a step back from direct threats, announcing a vague “framework” understanding on Greenland with NATO leadership. However, details of the agreement remain unclear.
In the aftermath, NATO launched a broader Arctic security initiative, increasing its presence in the region with participation from multiple allied countries.
Neither the Danish government, military authorities, nor Greenland’s leadership have officially commented on the reported details of the deployment.
