Hurricane Lowell threatens Hawaii’s western islands with heavy rain, strong winds

Hawaii: A hurricane watch has been issued for Hawaii's westernmost islands, Kauai and Niihau, as fierce Hurricane Lowell approaches the state from the north. On Sunday evening, the Category 3 storm was about 500 miles southwest of Lihue, with maximum sustained winds of around 120 mph (195 km/h).
Lowell is expected to pass west of Kauai and Niihau late Monday, but even if it does not make direct impact, the storm may cause severe conditions. Tropical-storm-force gusts, torrential rain, flash flooding, mudslides, and coastal flooding are all likely, with Kauai expected to receive 6 to 10 inches of rain and isolated totals of up to 14 inches.
Officials have warned residents and visitors to protect their residences, stock vital supplies, and be prepared for rapidly changing weather. Huge and dangerous surf is also expected, with waves on Kauai's south-facing beaches reaching 20 to 30 feet.
Lowell briefly reached Category 5 status earlier this week before decreasing, and forecasters continue to monitor its path and intensity as it approaches Hawaii.
