Maidugiri: At least 23 people were killed and more than 100 others injured in a series of suspected suicide bombings in Maiduguri, police said on Tuesday.

The blasts occurred on Monday evening across multiple locations in the city, the capital of Borno State, a region long affected by insurgent violence.

According to police, one explosion struck a busy local market, another hit the gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, while a third occurred near a post office.

State police spokesperson Nahum Kenneth Daso said preliminary investigations indicate the attacks were carried out by suspected suicide bombers. He confirmed that 23 people were killed and 108 others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

Security forces were swiftly deployed to the affected areas, which have since been cordoned off and searched for further threats. Authorities said normalcy has been restored.

The attacks follow an earlier assault on a military post between Sunday and Monday, which officials attributed to suspected Islamist militants.

Maiduguri has been at the centre of a long-running insurgency led by groups such as Boko Haram and its offshoot Islamic State West Africa Province. The conflict, aimed at establishing a caliphate, has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions across northeastern Nigeria.

While the city had not witnessed a major attack since 2021, the continued presence of checkpoints and military patrols highlights the persistent security challenges in the region.
