Dubai: An Indian educator widely recognised for bringing learning to children in underserved communities has been named the winner of the $1 million Global Teacher Prize at the World Governments Summit 2026 in Dubai.
Rouble Nagi, a teacher, artist and founder of the Rouble Nagi Art Foundation, received the prestigious award during a ceremony in the United Arab Emirates, where global leaders and educators convened to spotlight innovation in education.
Nagi’s work spans more than 800 learning centers across India, where children who have never attended formal school as well as those already enrolled are given opportunities to learn through flexible, engaging programs.
Her unique approach includes painting large educational murals in slum communities, turning walls into vibrant, accessible lessons in literacy, science, mathematics and history. These open-air visual classrooms help children learn in environments where traditional schooling is often unavailable.
The prize, funded by the Varkey Foundation in partnership with education advocates worldwide, honours outstanding commitment to teaching and serves as a reminder of the profound impact educators can have on learners and communities.
In her acceptance remarks, Nagi expressed gratitude and discussed plans to use the $1 million award to establish a vocational training institute that will offer free skill-building opportunities and further empower young people from marginalised backgrounds.
UNESCO representatives, who work with the prize organisers, noted Nagi’s achievement underscores the vital role of creative, inclusive teaching in expanding educational access.
Nagi is the tenth recipient of the Global Teacher Prize since its launch, joining a select group of educators from around the world recognised for transforming lives through teaching.
Her award at the summit, presented by UAE Crown Prince Shaikh Hamdan bin Mohammed alongside Sunny Varkey, reflects a growing global appreciation for approaches that meet learners where they are and challenge conventional classroom structures.
